GridwiseTech connects Philips Research to 30,000-CPU EGEE Grid
Monday, 20 November 2006

Image GridwiseTech, the vendor independent expert in scalable solutions, succeeded in connecting Philips Research, to the EGEE Grid infrastructure.

GridwiseTech, awarded top innovator in deploying scientific results in industry, helps enterprises to connect external Grid resources in the process of virtualizing their infrastructure.

The EGEE grid interconnected (as of 2006) 30,000 CPUs and some 15 Petabytes of storage, distributed among 195 data centers, mainly in Europe. Built on LCG/gLite Grid middleware, it is said to be the first grid production system deployed worldwide, so far mostly serving researchers.

In 2005 GridwiseTech was approached by Philips Research, in connection with their fundamental research program in the healthcare domain, including the simulation of potential new medical methodology and technology.

GridwiseTech was contracted to adapt the simulation to the external resources managed by the EGEE grid, integrating those with the internal environment of Philips Research. The desired scenario was to use the overload computing capacity to the extent needed at a given moment. After several months of work, the solution was delivered and is now in place. The engineers from GridwiseTech integrated job management environments, provided a user-friendly, application-centric grid portal layer and enabled the application to run, both internally and externally, within the designated grid’s secure virtual organization. Peak processing can now be scheduled in an on-demand fashion.

"The EGEE grid was originally conceived to serve the academic world. However, with thousands of distributed assets, interconnected with unconventional technology, it has great potential to become a virtual hub for businesses, the role that Stanford University had played for what later became the Silicon Valley."- says Pawel Plaszczak, President of GridwiseTech. "Our solution combined with LCG/gLite can easily serve other industrial customers, thus creating the foundations for a pan-European business grid. Naturally, in each case, individual arrangements need to be made with resource providers, such as the EGEE consortium members."
