In a typical company, the utilization of most servers is below 20%, while the desktop CPUs use only 5% of their cycles. In the same institution, a different department may have significant problems with end-of-month processing, regularly running behind the schedule due to insufficient resources. This is known as the inconvenient but still popular “silo” approach, where two lines of business do not share their dedicated resources.

A solution recently gaining ground is harnessing most company resources into one virtual shared pool of resources.
