| improve resource utilization |

In a typical company, the utilization of most servers is below 20%, while the desktop CPUs use only 5% of their cycles. In the same institution, a different department may have significant problems with end-of-month processing, regularly running behind the schedule due to insufficient resources. This is known as the inconvenient but still popular “silo” approach, where two lines of business do not share their dedicated resources. A solution recently gaining ground is harnessing most company resources into one virtual shared pool of resources. This is also known as the Grid Computing paradigm, enabling a controlled sharing of IT resources between the silos. Sharing policies regulate business priorities, secure access, accounting and internal billing. Experience shows that after virtualizing the architecture can increase resource utilization from 5 – 20 up to 80 – 90% of CPUs at any given point of time. The users' experience is then radically improved, since their applications compute and return results faster by orders of magnitude. |
