In order to work in the distributed fashion, the applications require integration with cluster and Grid middleware. This integration has been dubbed “grid-enabling”. Grid-enabling sometimes results in performance improvement by orders of magnitude.

Adapting to the distributed paradigm is a non-linear task, requiring a complex knowledge of available patterns and solutions to integrate with. For some applications the work is limited to tuning, configuration and testing, while in case of other legacy technologies source code-level work may be necessary. A close examination and system computational characteristics analysis is necessary to determine the most reasonable route in a particular case.
