Ruch SA improves their integrated system

RUCH SA is one of the largest Polish press distributors. The company has over 40% market share. In their stores they sell nearly four thousand newspapers and magazines. Overall, Ruch delivers to almost 28 000 stores in Poland. The company also distributes FMCG.

Within their 2008-2011 strategy, Ruch aimed to improve their business processes and intensify their overall development, in order to mitigate against the possible impact of the financial crisis. One main tool for achieving this goal is Ruch’s ERP system based on Oracle E-Business Suite, customized to match their needs. It enables efficient control over company departments, warehouses and newsagents nationwide, monitoring their financial status and product flow. At the beginning of 2010, the system covered 4 of 16 departments, and, in accordance with the development strategy, the remaining 12 were to be added by the end of 2011. To achieve this, Ruch’s IT resources underwent a major refinement process.

The ERP system in RUCH SA was not working the way it was expected to. At the end of each month it was so overloaded that its users had to work after hours to complete their tasks. This increased labour costs and decreased equipment utilization. Apart from the financial consequences, the situation threatened to suppress development. To prevent this, RUCH decided to optimize their system.

GridwiseTech’s engineers optimized RUCH’s databases, closely following GWT’s Momentum Methodology. Momentum defines the most effective approach to efficiency problems. The results of the engineers’ work exceeded RUCH’s initial assumptions: instead of a 60% speed-up within specific queries, they achieved several times more. GridwiseTech also delivered guidance on possible system development directions. The final recommendations will be implemented to achieve the long-term goals set out in the 2008-2011 RUCH development plan.
